WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Appalachian Power has issued a storm alert ahead of a powerful line of thunderstorms expected to sweep across much of its service area beginning Friday afternoon and lasting into Saturday morning.
The storm system is forecasted to bring heavy rain, hail, and damaging winds of up to 75 mph, with the potential for tornadoes.

Areas expected to be hardest hit include Huntington and Charleston.
Company officials report that all employees are on standby to respond to potential outages.
Additionally, 1,700 storm response workers from nearby states have been requested to assist as part of a mutual aid effort.
Some storms could cause significant damage, including toppling trees and knocking out power to homes and businesses.
Appalachian Power urges customers to be prepared by signing up for outage alerts and reviewing emergency plans.
Residents are advised to take the following safety precautions:
- Prepare or update an emergency kit with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, batteries, a flashlight, radio, medications, blankets, and pet supplies.
- Review a family emergency plan, especially for those with medical needs or limited mobility.
- Secure outdoor items like furniture and trampolines that could become airborne in strong winds.
Appalachian Power also reminds the public to stay clear of downed power lines and to report any safety hazards immediately by calling 911 or the company directly.
