MONONGALIA COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Monongalia County has confirmed its first reported case of Alpha-Gal Syndrome, a tick-borne illness that triggers a lifelong allergy to red meat and other animal products.
The condition is spread by the bite of the Lone Star tick, a species that has been appearing more frequently in northern West Virginia. While deer ticks remain common in the region, health officials note that the rise in Lone Star ticks increases the risk of exposure.
Alpha-Gal Syndrome became a reportable disease in West Virginia in June 2025, meaning cases are now tracked and monitored by state health agencies. Symptoms of the illness can include severe allergic reactions hours after consuming beef, pork, lamb, or other mammal-derived foods.
Health experts are reminding residents to take precautions when spending time outdoors. Recommended safety steps include wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and carefully checking yourself, children, and pets for ticks after returning inside.
