FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The Fayette County Humane Society has announced the return of a familiar face: Kahuna, a 7–8-year-old mixed-breed dog who first came to the shelter seven months ago as part of a cruelty case.
Staff members say they spotted him unexpectedly — and unmistakably — while scrolling through local lost dog pages on Facebook.
“Like many people do at 1 p.m., we were scrolling through the lost dog pages like undercover detectives, just making sure none of our former residents had pulled a disappearing act,” the organization shared. “And then there he was — Kahuna — front and center, looking like he’d been caught sneaking out after curfew.”
A Shelter Favorite With a Big Personality
Kahuna is no ordinary dog, according to the Humane Society. Described as having the confidence of someone who shows up to a job interview with no qualifications and still gets the position, staff say he brings both humor and heart wherever he goes.
“He marches to the beat of his own drum — actually, he probably fired the drummer, hired a saxophone player, and then forgot about the whole thing,” the shelter joked. “He is chaos. He is joy. He is a walking sitcom character.”
Health Improvements and Veterinary Care
Since returning to the shelter 12 days ago, Kahuna has already shown noticeable improvement. Staff report that he is gaining weight, and his coat is returning to a bright, healthy shine.
“He’s not crusty — he’s textured,” the organization added with affection.
Kahuna is fully up-to-date on vaccines, dewormer, and flea/tick prevention. He also comes with a free spay/neuter voucher, and thanks to a generous donor, his entire adoption fee is sponsored.
A Dog Who Loves Everyone
According to staff, Kahuna gets along well with dogs, cats, children, adults, mail carriers, delivery drivers — “and even raccoons who mind their business.”
“If Kahuna were a person, he’d be the neighbor who waves at everyone, accidentally becomes the president of the HOA, and shows up with banana bread even though you’ve never met,” the Humane Society shared.
Ready for His Forever Family
Shelter staff describe Kahuna as “perfect — perfect-perfect — the kind of dog who should have his own merchandise line.” They believe the right family is out there and hope someone recognizes the “main character energy” he brings.
“Someone out there is meant to be his family,” the organization said. “We’re just waiting for them to realize they’ve been missing a legend this whole time.”
Kahuna is currently available for adoption through the Fayette County Humane Society.
