WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) — Forecasters have issued an updated winter storm briefing Monday, downgrading several counties while warning that heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel will continue across much of the region.
Officials say Doddridge, Jackson, Lincoln, Putnam, Ritchie, and Wirt counties have now been downgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory as snowfall expectations there have decreased.
Winter Storm Warnings Remain for Many Counties
A Winter Storm Warning continues for Barbour, Braxton, Clay, Fayette, Lewis, Nicholas, Raleigh, Randolph, Taylor, Upshur, Webster, and northwest Pocahontas counties, where an additional 5 to 10 inches of snow is expected along with wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. The warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Boone, Calhoun, Gilmer, Harrison, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Roane, Wyoming, and southeast Pocahontas counties remain under a warning for up to 3 additional inches of snow and gusts up to 35 mph, also lasting until 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Winter Weather Advisories in Effect
Counties including Doddridge, Jackson, Lincoln, Putnam, Ritchie, and Wirt could see up to 1 inch of additional snowfall with gusts reaching 35 mph. Those advisories are in effect until 7 p.m. Monday.
In neighboring Buchanan and Dickenson counties, up to 2 inches of additional snow and similar wind gusts are possible through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Wind Advisory Issued in Mountain Areas
A separate Wind Advisory is in place for northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph counties, where sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph are expected until 10 p.m. Monday.
Travel Could Become Dangerous
Officials warn that roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick and hazardous, while blowing and heavy snow could reduce visibility to near-whiteout conditions. The dangerous weather may significantly impact both the morning and evening commutes Monday.
Residents are urged to use caution, allow extra travel time, and monitor the latest forecasts as conditions evolve.
