CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) today announced that tickets are available for 2026 Elk Management Tours. These annual tours offer visitors the opportunity to explore scenic areas of Logan County and learn about the state’s Elk Restoration Program. The first tour will take place Sunday, Sept. 13, with tours continuing on weekends through Oct. 24.
“Restoring elk to West Virginia has been one of our state’s greatest conservation success stories, and these guided tours offer the public a front-row seat to that achievement,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “Experiencing these magnificent animals firsthand connects visitors directly to our wildlife heritage and gives them a deeper appreciation for the ongoing work required to maintain a healthy herd for generations to come.”
These four-hour guided tours start and end at Chief Logan Lodge in Chief Logan State Park. Tours are offered in the morning, starting at 5:30 a.m. and in the evening starting at 4:30 p.m.
The excursion involves walking up to 2-3 miles. Participants should arrive at least 15 minutes before departure. Each tour is led by knowledgeable park staff and offers opportunities to learn about the history, behavior and conservation of elk in West Virginia. While sightings are not guaranteed, visitors are often able to observe these animals in their natural habitat.
Visitors can also observe wildlife from the new elk-viewing platform and education center that opened last year at Tomblin Wildlife Management Area. A level viewing area is also accessible for those with limited mobility.

About the Elk Restoration Project
The WVDNR launched its Elk Restoration Project in 2016 with the release of 24 elk acquired from the Land Between the Lakes.
