(LOOTPRESS) – President Donald Trump says he supports the use of Flock cameras, citing their benefits for law enforcement while acknowledging concerns over privacy.
Trump was asked Sunday about Flock Safety cameras, which are automated license plate readers used by law enforcement agencies across the country to identify and track vehicles.
“I sort of like them because of that, because of law enforcement, but some people don’t. They think it’s an infringement, but I like them,” Trump said.
The comments mark a clearer position from Trump on the controversial camera systems. In August, Trump said there were “pros and cons” to the technology and indicated his administration was examining the issue.
Flock cameras photograph vehicles and record information including license plate numbers, vehicle characteristics, locations and timestamps. Law enforcement agencies can search the system to help locate vehicles connected to crimes, missing persons and other investigations.
The technology has also drawn criticism from privacy advocates and others concerned about the collection and sharing of vehicle-location data.
Trump acknowledged those concerns in his latest remarks but indicated that the law enforcement benefits led him to support the cameras.
