FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia American Water has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 1,176 customers in Fayette County following a power failure.
The advisory affects customers in Montgomery, Handley and Smithers, along with portions of Cannelton Hollow, Route 60 and Route 61.
According to the water company, crews are working to make repairs as quickly as possible, with water service estimated to be restored around 5 p.m.
Once service is restored, affected customers are advised to boil water before drinking or using it for cooking, bathing or brushing teeth until further notice. Water should be brought to a full boil for at least one minute and allowed to cool before use.
West Virginia American Water said additional water quality samples will be collected once the system recovers. Testing requires a minimum of 24 hours, and customers will be notified when the advisory can be lifted.
Customers are also advised to discard beverages and ice cubes made with tap water and provide pets with boiled and cooled water. The company said most home water filters do not provide adequate protection from microorganisms during a boil water advisory.
