HUNTINGTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Huntington City Council is considering an ordinance that would ban the use of engine braking, commonly known as Jake braking, within city limits.
The proposed ordinance received its first reading during the council’s meeting Monday evening.
Engine braking is a method commonly used by truck drivers to slow a vehicle by easing off the accelerator and shifting to a lower gear rather than relying solely on the vehicle’s brakes. The practice can produce loud noise, particularly from large trucks.
Under the proposed ordinance, engine braking would be prohibited within Huntington, with an exception for emergency situations, such as when a driver needs to use the technique to avoid a crash.
The ordinance is scheduled for a second reading at the Huntington City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 12. Members of the public will have an opportunity to comment before council members vote on whether to enact the ban.
If approved, signs would be installed throughout Huntington notifying motorists of the restriction. Drivers who violate the ordinance could be issued a citation.
