OAK HILL, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Oak Hill Sanitary Board will conduct smoke testing of sanitary and storm sewer systems in the community as part of an effort to identify potential problems within the system.
According to the Sanitary Board, smoke testing is used to locate leaking sewers, lost manholes, faulty sewer connections and locations where rainwater runoff may be entering the sanitary sewer system.
Testing will take place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Residents may notice smoke coming from sewer roof vents during the testing.
Officials said smoke could also enter a home or building if it has a faulty sewer connection. The smoke used during testing is non-toxic, non-staining and free of oil and colored particles, and officials said it does not create a fire hazard. Residents can open windows and doors to help the smoke dissipate.
Anyone with asthma, emphysema or another respiratory condition is encouraged to contact the Sanitary Board before testing to discuss their circumstances.
If smoke or odors enter a building, officials said it could indicate that sewer gases may also be able to enter. Residents are asked to report evidence of smoke inside their homes to the Oak Hill Sanitary Board and contact a plumber. Repairs to defects in pipes or sewer connections located on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.
In the days before testing, residents should pour water down all drains in their homes or buildings to ensure U-bend sewer traps are full.
Questions may be directed to the Oak Hill Sanitary Board at 304-469-9541 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
