Former Beckley police officer seeks August 2027 jury trial in lawsuit against city, police chief

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A former Beckley Police Department officer who filed a lawsuit against the City of Beckley and two members of the department is asking a Raleigh County judge to establish a schedule for the case, including a jury trial in August 2027.

Alyssa Christian-Redden, identified as Alyssa Redden in court documents, filed a motion on September 30, 2026, requesting that Raleigh County Circuit Judge Michael E. Froble schedule a conference and establish deadlines for the lawsuit.

Redden filed the lawsuit in March 2026 against the City of Beckley, Police Chief Dean Bailey and Sgt. William Reynolds, alleging wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment and violations of her rights as a police officer.

According to the complaint, Redden was terminated on March 25, 2024, shortly after suffering a workplace injury and filing a workers’ compensation claim.

She alleges that she was treated differently from male officers, subjected to harassment during training and terminated without receiving proper notice or an opportunity for a hearing.

The lawsuit also claims that male officers involved in vehicle crashes were not subjected to the same disciplinary treatment.

Redden is seeking compensation for lost wages, benefits, emotional distress and other damages, along with possible reinstatement.

In the September 30 filing, Redden’s attorney, D. Adrian Hoosier II, states that attorneys representing both sides have already agreed to most of the proposed deadlines needed to move the lawsuit forward.

However, Redden is requesting additional time to potentially amend her lawsuit or add parties after obtaining further evidence.

Her attorney argues that important records, including personnel files, information about officers involved in her termination and records concerning other officers, remain in the defendants’ possession.

The motion asks the court to extend the deadline for adding parties or amending the complaint to December 18, 2026, or 45 days after a scheduling order is entered, whichever is later.

Under the proposed schedule, the process of gathering evidence and taking testimony would conclude by March 7, 2027.

The proposal also calls for mediation, an attempt to resolve the lawsuit without going to trial, to be completed by May 20, 2027.

If the case is not resolved beforehand, Redden is requesting a jury trial in August 2027, which attorneys estimate would last three to four days.

Court documents indicate that the defendants filed an amended response to the lawsuit on June 9, 2026.

The September 30 filing is a request from Redden’s attorney and does not establish that the judge has approved the proposed deadlines or scheduled a trial.

The case remains before Judge Froble in Raleigh County Circuit Court.
