A Green Beret, a Beauty Queen, and a US Senate Campaign Turning Heads Fast in West Virginia

In a race already drawing nationwide attention, one story is breaking through the noise in West Virginia—and it reads less like a traditional political campaign and more like something out of a headline-grabbing feature.

A battle-tested Green Beret.
An international beauty queen.
A love story shaped by loss, resilience, and second chances.

At the center of it all are Tom Willis and his wife, Sara Willis —a couple whose unlikely journey is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about narratives of the 2026 Senate race.

From War Zones to the Political Arena

Before he resoundingly defeated a powerful Lieutenant Governor to earn his seat as a State Senator, Tom Willis lived a life defined by high-stakes missions and quiet discipline. As a U.S. Army Special Forces officer—a Green Beret—he operated in some of the world’s most volatile regions, building a reputation for leadership under pressure.

Adding to his military service, he layered on elite legal credentials to his résumé, studying at the University of Virginia and Georgetown Law before entering private practice and business. He now owns his own law firm in WV with three offices, a title and escrow company, and a general contracting company.  On paper, it’s the kind of background voters expect from a serious candidate – one who understands how to create jobs and balance the budget.

But what’s drawing attention now isn’t just his credentials—it’s the story behind them.

Because Willis’s life has also been marked by profound tragedy. He lost his first wife to cancer, and years later, his son after a long, grueling illness. Those experiences, he says, didn’t just change him—they clarified his purpose.

“I’ve seen what really matters when everything else gets stripped away,” Willis said. “Titles and jobs come and go—but how you love people and show up for them, that’s what stays.”

He has said that enduring those losses taught him how deeply others hurt and reinforced his belief that life is ultimately about caring for people and standing alongside them in difficult times. “I don’t pretend to have all the answers,” he added, “but I do understand what it means to hurt—and I think that matters when you’re trying to serve others.”

Then Enter Sara…

If Tom’s life feels like a military drama, Sara’s story adds an entirely different dimension.

Born in Macedonia and known in her home country as a former Miss Macedonia, Sara brought with her a world far removed from the hills of Appalachia. Poised, striking, and internationally recognized, she could have lived a life in the spotlight.

Instead, she chose something very different.

The two met in 2008 during one of Willis’s deployments. He has recounted that when they first crossed paths, it quickly became clear that she was widely recognized where they were—but what stood out to him wasn’t her title, it was their connection.

“I’ll be honest—I had no idea who she was at first,” Willis said with a laugh. “Everyone else did, which probably made me look like the most clueless guy in the room.”

At the time, he didn’t hide his circumstances. He told her upfront that he was a widower with young children. It was a complicated reality—one that might have ended many relationships before they began.

“I figured if she was going to run, better to find out on day one,” he said. “Instead, she leaned in—and that told me everything I needed to know about her.”

It didn’t end this one.

Within a year, they were married.

A Love Story Built After Loss

What followed wasn’t a whirlwind of publicity or glamour, but something quieter—and arguably more compelling.

Sara stepped into a life that required strength, patience, and compassion. She became part of a family still carrying the weight of loss, helping to rebuild and move forward.

Willis has often reflected on that early honesty, noting that despite everything he laid out, she chose to move forward based on what they shared rather than what stood in the way.

“She didn’t sign up for an easy life,” he said. “She chose a real one—and I’ll never forget that.”

Seventeen years later, that decision has become the foundation of a marriage that those close to them describe as steady, grounded, and deeply committed.

The Beauty Queen Who Walked Away from the Spotlight

Here’s where the story takes an unexpected turn.

Despite a background that could have kept her in front of cameras, Sara has done the opposite. Friends describe her as intensely private—someone who avoids attention and prefers to focus on family, faith, and building a life behind the scenes.

While many political spouses embrace visibility, she has remained largely out of public view, helping raise their children and supporting the family’s business ventures.

Willis has said she has no interest in being front and center, instead choosing to invest her time in their home and in caring for others.

“If it were up to her, nobody would even know her name,” he joked. “She’d rather be at home with the kids or making sure everything’s running right with our businesses than anywhere near the spotlight.”

He often points to her as a source of strength and stability—someone whose influence is felt far more than it is seen. “She’s the steady one,” he added. “I may be the one out front, but she’s the reason everything behind the scenes actually works.”

Two Worlds, One Story

It’s the contrast that makes the Willis story so compelling:

A soldier shaped by war and personal loss
A woman with international roots and quiet poise

Together, they’ve built a life that blends those worlds—right in the heart of West Virginia.

And now, that life is stepping onto a much bigger stage.

“We’re not perfect people,” Willis said. “We’re just trying to do the next right thing for our family and our state—and trust God with the rest.”

A Campaign That’s About More Than Politics

Willis is now challenging longtime incumbent Shelley Moore Capito, positioning himself as a more conservative, outsider alternative for U.S. Senate.

He is passionate about the issues— creating jobs and a bettereconomy for WV, reigning in the cost of living, and border security.

But what’s capturing attention isn’t just the policy.

It’s the story.

In a political era often dominated by polished messaging and predictable narratives, the Willis campaign offers something different: a real-life journey marked by hardship, resilience, and an unexpected partnership that defies stereotypes.

“I’m not a career politician,” Willis said. “I’m a guy who’s been knocked down a few times and got back up—and I think a lot of West Virginians can relate to that.”

The Story Voters Can’t Ignore

At the center of this campaign is more than a candidate—it’s a relationship that has quietly endured and grown through some of life’s hardest moments.

And at the heart of that relationship is Sara:

A former beauty queen who chose privacy over publicity
A wife who stepped into a life shaped by loss—and helped rebuild it
A partner whose influence is steady, even if it stays out of view

Whether that story translates into political momentum remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain:

In a crowded and often predictable political landscape, the story of Tom and Sara Willis is anything but ordinary—and voters across West Virginia are starting to take notice.
