Crews are making great progress repairing damage from severe thunderstorms last night that left more than 28,000 Appalachian Power customers without electric service. The damaging storm system was the third to strike the company’s service area in the past 8 days.
Outages
Nearly 80 percent of the customers who lost power as a result of last night’s storm damage have had service restored.
In West Virginia around 5,600 customers are currently without electric service. Counties with the most storm-related outages include Kanawha (2,800), Raleigh (1,100), Fayette (600) and Boone (400).
In Virginia, most of the 700 customers currently without service are in Giles County.
Storm Response Efforts
More than 1,200 workers are part of the restoration effort, including nearly 200 from outside the company’s service area.
Restoration Estimates
Most customers who lost power due to storm damage in Virginia should have service restored by tonight. In Giles County, which saw heavy storm damage, restoration work is expected to conclude Friday afternoon.
In harder-hit areas of West Virginia, including parts of Clay, Fayette, Kanawha, Nicholas, Raleigh Roane and Summers counties, restoration work to most customers is expected to be complete by late Friday night. In other West Virginia counties most customers still without power should have service restored by late tonight.
Restoration may extend beyond these times in isolated cases with extensive damage.

Safety Messages
Storms that produce heavy wind and rain cause damage that downs power lines. Customers should treat all downed lines as live power lines and stay away from them.
Keep children and pets away from fallen lines and anything the lines may touch.
Never remove debris that’s within 10 feet of a power line.
