CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – With a key federal identification deadline approaching, the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles is urging residents to make sure they have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification before traveling by air.
Beginning February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration will require airline passengers who do not have a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID, such as a passport, to complete an additional identity verification process at airport security. That process will include a $45 fee.
“It’s easy to get your Real ID,” said Everett Frazier, commissioner of the West Virginia DMV. “Come into any DMV office. You’ll be greeted and welcomed, our staff are here to answer your questions and make every process as easy as possible.”
The DMV is also encouraging residents to take advantage of its REAL ID Headstart option available online at dmv.wv.gov. The service allows customers to upload required documents before visiting a DMV office, which can reduce wait times and help ensure all paperwork is in order.
“The first time you get the REAL ID, you bring in your birth certificate and your name change documents, along with two proofs of your physical West Virginia address,” said Mike May, who manages the REAL ID program for the West Virginia DMV. “After that, it’s the same as a regular renewal every time.”
According to the DMV, more than 64 percent of West Virginians already have a REAL ID, identified by a small star in the upper corner of their driver’s license.
The REAL ID is accepted not only for air travel but also for entry into certain federal facilities, including offices such as the Social Security Administration. It is also compatible with new Mobile ID systems, which display the same star on a digital license.
“Life happens,” said Frazier. “Even for someone who has never flown, you don’t know when you might have to. Don’t let your procrastination become your frustration. We’re here to help.”
More information about obtaining a REAL ID is available at dmv.wv.gov or at local DMV offices statewide.
