Barbara was a 1953 graduate of Princeton High School and attended Concord College. She worked at several businesses in Princeton, including Brock’s Restaurant, Jimmy’s Restaurant, and Hickman’s Drug Store where she met the love of her life, her husband Joe of 56 years. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love for children extended to her nieces, nephews, and the 7 children she babysat over a 23-year period. Barbara faithfully attended First United Methodist Church for 49 years where she supported several ministries throughout the years. Barbara and Joe loved to travel and did so with the Silver Saints, the DMA’s, and Christian Tours where they formed many treasured friendships.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald P. Martin and William D. Martin; and son-in-law, Jerry Thompson.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Joe Hampton; daughters, Brenda Thompson and Donna Barton (Butch); granddaughters, Alexis and Kirsten; sisters Mary Ann Smith and Judy McCoy (Paul), brother, Jim Martin (Jane), sister-in-law, Caroline Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Tom McDowell officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and close friends will serve as pallbearers.
