BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Following one of the strongest enrollment growth rates among West Virginia’s public four-year colleges, Bluefield State University has announced a new strategic plan aimed at guiding the institution’s growth through the end of the decade.
The plan, titled “Building the Future Together,” outlines the university’s goals through 2030 and focuses on expanding opportunities for students across southern West Virginia and the surrounding Appalachian region.
University officials say the announcement comes as Bluefield State continues to see rising enrollment. The university recently reported 7.8% overall enrollment growth, along with 9.5% growth in full-time equivalent enrollment, the highest among public four-year institutions in West Virginia. First-time freshman enrollment also increased 37%, signaling growing interest from new students.
Bluefield State University President Dr. Darrin Martin said the strategic plan will help the institution build on its momentum.
“Bluefield State is experiencing a period of renewed growth and optimism,” Martin said. “This strategic plan provides a clear direction for where we are headed and how we will continue expanding opportunity for students while serving the workforce and communities of our region.”
The roadmap outlines several key priorities for the university, including growing enrollment, improving student retention and success, strengthening the overall student experience, maintaining financial stability, advancing academic programs, and investing in faculty and staff development.
University leaders say the plan also emphasizes strengthening partnerships with employers and community organizations while aligning academic programs with workforce needs in high-demand fields.
“Our responsibility is not only to educate students, but to prepare them for meaningful careers and leadership in their communities,” Martin said.
The strategic plan was developed through a collaborative process involving faculty, staff, and university leadership. Dr. Amanda R. Matoushek, dean of the College of Arts, Education, and Social Sciences and professor of psychology, said the document reflects the university’s commitment to student success and long-term institutional growth.
“This strategic plan reflects the true nature of Bluefield State, supporting development of our students academically, civically, and ethically while preparing them to make impactful change locally and globally,” Matoushek said.
University officials say collaboration with alumni, community partners, and industry leaders will also play a key role in achieving the plan’s goals. The initiative aims to strengthen Bluefield State’s role as a workforce and economic partner for southern West Virginia by expanding career pathways and helping meet regional workforce demands.
The plan focuses on six major priorities:
-
Growing enrollment through expanded recruitment and new pathways for traditional and nontraditional students
-
Strengthening student retention and success through improved advising and support services
-
Enhancing the student experience and career readiness opportunities
-
Ensuring financial sustainability through diversified funding and responsible budgeting
-
Advancing academic excellence by aligning programs with workforce needs
-
Investing in faculty and staff development through training and professional growth opportunities
