STATESVILLE, NC (LOOTPRESS) — A Cessna C550 business jet crashed while attempting to land Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport, prompting a large emergency response and temporary road closures surrounding the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash, which occurred shortly after an emergency call was placed around 10:20 a.m. According to public records, the aircraft—tail number N257BW—is registered to GB Aviation Leasing, a company sharing an address with NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. It remains unknown whether Biffle or anyone associated with him was onboard at the time.
Channel 9’s Dave Faherty reported from the scene as additional first responders arrived, with access roads around the airport blocked to the public.
A witness at the nearby Lakewood Golf Club said the jet appeared to be flying “way too low” moments before the crash.
While foggy conditions were present at the airport Thursday morning, investigators have not confirmed whether weather played a role. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations into the incident.
The Cessna C550 typically seats seven to eight passengers, though officials have not yet released information regarding who was onboard or whether there were any fatalities.
No further details have been released.
