CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia Division of Highways work crews reopened a section of Cabin Creek Road in Kanawha County that was blocked by a mud and rockslide for several hours.
A mud and rockslide closed both lanes of Cabin Creek Road not far from Chelyan about 2:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2021. The slide also downed power lines, which remained live.
WVDOH District 1 Manager Arlie Matney said DOH had crews in the area and were able to shut down the road almost immediately to direct motorists away from the slide and power lines. Matney said DOH had heavy equipment on site by 5:15 a.m., and were able to start clearing debris the moment power was shut down in the area.
“Our guys responded extremely fast and had everything they needed on the road to do the job,” Matney said.
“We want our roads open and safe as quickly as possible,” he said. “You never know if there’s going to be an emergency and someone will have to get in or out.”
Matney said the road reopened around noon.
