CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Lt. David Payne and the Charleston Police Department announced Friday that it would be awarding five scholarships to five graduates from a Charleston area high school to attend a college or trade school of their choosing as part of the department’s Team CPD Scholarship program.
The Team CPD (Children Pursuing Dreams) Scholarship is a hands-on mentoring program in which officers work directly with children to teach life skills, the importance of good decision making, and the value in giving back to the community while building relationships with the police.
The selection process for the scholarship will be based upon a number of factors, including a written essay, community service hours, and a recommendation from a school administrator or other community leader.
Upon selection of and contact made with the students ultimately selected for the scholarship program, the selectees will be announced and presented at the Sternwheel Regatta on Sunday, July 3, 2022 during “First Responder Night.”
Participation and donations from the inaugural Team CPD Corn Hole Tournament hosted by 304 Hole Hunters and CPAAA volunteers at Laidley Field in August of 2021 will serve to fund the scholarship program.
Applications for the program can be found here, and should be submitted along with a letter of recommendation from a school administrator, school counselor, or other community leader.
Included as part of the scholarship application should be a personal statement/scholarship essay (maximum of one page) which entails personal history, academic and professional goals, how the scholarship would be of benefit, what makes the applicant an ideal candidate, and details pertaining to community and volunteer services.
Applications for the program should be returned to Lt. David Payne, Charleston Police Department Public Services Division Commander at 501 Virginia Street, Charleston, WV 25301, or by email at David.payne@charlestonwvpolice.org.
The deadline for submission of applications for the scholarship program is Wednesday, June 1, 2022.
