BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS)– The board of directors with the City of Bluefield announced earlier today to approve a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth.
The board voted unanimously to approve the proclamation on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021 at their monthly board meeting.
“Juneteenth has enormous historical and cultural significance and current relevance in Bluefield and throughout the country,” said the proclamation.
Juneteenth is a historical holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Governor Jim Justice marked Juneteenth as a state holiday for the first time in West Virginia on May 21, 2021.
The City of Bluefield will celebrate Juneteenth with a march from Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge to Chicory Square. This event is hosted and organized by Ken Hunt (pictured on the right, holding the sign).
West Virginia will also celebrate Juneteenth with a virtual performance by R&B singer Montell Jordan. It will also feature different musicians, artists, dancers and poets.
