BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Details have emerged regarding the condition of Beckley senior Elijah Redfern, who sustained a medical emergency during a weekend matchup against Bluefield.
A statement from Beckley Football indicates that Woodrow Wilson Coach Sarrett was able to get in contact with the student-athlete on Sunday morning, indicating that he is currently in recovery at a hospital in the Roanoke area.
Although specifics regarding the nature of the emergency were not disclosed, Redfern is said to have asked for information regarding the final outcome of Saturday’s game.
“Thank everyone for all their prayers and support from our football family,” said Beckley Football in a statement. “God answered our prayers. Please continue to keep him and his family in your prayers.”
Redfern offered a notable performance prior to the incident, catching seven passes for three touchdowns.

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An outpouring of support could be felt on Saturday following the end-of-game collapse of Beckley Senior Elijah Redfern near the conclusion of a matchup against Bluefield.
The Flying Eagles claimed a 28-27 away-from-home victory over the Beavers thanks in no small part to a standout performance from Redfern, who notched seven catches for three touchdowns on Saturday.
The receiver collapsed near the end of the matchup for reasons seemingly unclear to those present, with Woodrow Wilson Coach Street Sarrett expressing uncertainty as to the cause.
Redfern was transported from the field by ambulance to receive medical care. No indication has been given at the time of writing as to the condition of the athlete.
Schools and organizations throughout the Raleigh County community have since expressed well-wishes and offered prayers for the student, who caught for 113 yards in Saturday’s game.
State lawmakers have also offered condolences, with West Virginia House of Delegates member Todd Kirby stating,
“Join me and the entire city in lifting this young man and his friends and family up in prayer. I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now.”
Delegate Eric Brooks similarly expressed hope for Redfern’s recovery and encouraged prayer for the player.
”Please pray for this young man tonight. May God bless him and give him a full recovery.”
