House District 67:
Elias Coop-Gonzalez- Republican 3,490 votes – 60%
Cody Thompson- Democrat (Incumbent) 2,299 votes – 40%
Incumbent Democrat Cody Thompson has been defeated by Republican challenger Elias Coop-Gonzalez for the District 67 House race. Thompson, a two-term Delegate from Pocahontas County, was harangued on social media for racial comments made about his opponent’s Hispanic heritage. Thompson, a school teacher in Pocahontas County, was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2018. Elias Coop-Gonzalez is a former staffer for Congressman Alex Mooney and has worked for the Leadership Institute, an educational non-profit focusing on conservative policy.
Thompson released the following statement: “Tonight wasn’t in our favor. It’s truly been an honor to serve the 43rd District for the past 4 years. I’ve met so many amazing people in Randolph and Pocahontas Counties. It was an uphill battle with how the Republican Party gerrymandered my district and going up against the the many attack mailers sent against me, and an opponent who wouldn’t debate or answer the questions asked. I can’t thank everyone enough who supported me over the past 4 years. I look forward to getting my life, voice, and identity back. Thank you all so much for your help and support, it means a lot. I now plan to turn my focus to exposing truths and living my best life.”
