GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A late-night shooting involving law enforcement is under investigation after deputies with the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office exchanged gunfire with an armed individual near Greenbrier West High School.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on April 6, 2026, at approximately 11:57 p.m., when three deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area.
While checking the vicinity, deputies reported hearing additional gunshots coming from a wooded area west of the school campus and moved toward the source.
As deputies approached, they observed a light moving through the woods and made contact with a single individual. Officials said deputies issued verbal commands to the person.
Authorities reported that the individual then raised a pistol and fired at deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking the individual.
Law enforcement secured the weapon and began lifesaving measures while requesting emergency medical assistance. No deputies were injured during the incident.
Fire and EMS crews responded to the scene, and the individual was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment. The person’s condition has not been released.
Officials emphasized that although the incident occurred near Greenbrier West High School, it was not connected to the school and there is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the campus.
The West Virginia State Police are leading the investigation. No additional details have been released at this time.
Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker praised the response of those involved, stating, “I commend these deputies for their courage and professionalism during this incident. They acted exactly as they were trained.”
“I also extend my thanks to the Rainelle Volunteer Fire Department, Quinwood Volunteer Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs EMS, and AirEvac for their rapid response and assistance in transporting the subject to a trauma center. Additionally, I appreciate the Greenbrier County 911 dispatchers for their prompt coordination, as well as the support from the Lewisburg Police Department, Ronceverte Police Department, White Sulphur Police Department, and the West Virginia State Police.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
