FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Fayette County Schools Superintendent Gary Hough has announced his retirement after 45 years of service, effective July 1, 2025.
Hough, who has served the district in various capacities, shared his decision during a recent Board of Education meeting, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

“It is with sadness in my heart, but also with anticipation for the next phase of my life, that I formally notify you of my retirement,” Hough said in a letter he read to board members at the January 7 meeting.
“I have truly been blessed to spend 45 years of my adult life working for Fayette County Schools.”
Hough expressed gratitude to the Board of Education, his staff, and the community for their support throughout his tenure.
“As a Board of Education, each of you has treated me not just as an employee, but as a member of the family, and for that, I will be forever grateful,” Hough said.
Hough acknowledged the work that remains in the months leading up to his retirement, including key projects to strengthen the district’s programs and staff.
“Over the next five to six months, we have a lot of work to do. There’s no sitting back,” he said. “We’ve talked about developing a bond call, moving the system forward for the future, and continuing to build stability within staff.“
Board of Education President Pat Gray praised Hough’s leadership and dedication to the district.
“We are all sad professionally, but happy for you personally,” Gray said. “We appreciate what you’ve done in this county, and we’ve still got some work to do.”
Hough also pledged his full support to the Board and his successor, emphasizing his commitment to a smooth transition.
“I will not interfere with the placement of the new superintendent,” Hough said. “I will be very glad to do whatever that person asks me to do to make them a success and to make this board a success.”
Hough concluded by expressing his excitement for the future while acknowledging the bittersweet nature of his departure.
“There’s a joy in my heart because I’ll be spending more time with my children and my grandchildren. But there’s also sadness.”
