South Charleston – Trailing 5-0, Herbert Hoover scored six straight runs to beat Oak Glen 6-5 Wednesday at Little Creek Park in South Charleston to win its fourth straight Class AA state championship.
The Huskies became the first Class AA team since 2016 to fight out of the loser’s bracket and win the state championship.
They did so by beating Sissonville 10-0 Wednesday morning, Oak Glen 10-0 later in the afternoon to force the extra game and won the championship in eight innings.
The Huskies faced an uphill battle throughout the third game.
They trailed 5-2 heading into the seventh, but back-to-back doubles gave them life. They eventually tied the game to force extra innings.
Senior Cortney Fizer delivered in her final plate appearance in a Hoover uniform, hitting a single that scored the winning-run in the top of the eighth. Oak Glen got the tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the frame, but a flyout secured by Fizer ended the game, clinching the title.
In potentially her last high school at-bat, Hoover’s Cortney Fizer delivers an RBI single that gives Hoover a 6-5 lead.
