HINTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In 2020, Hinton Mayor Jack Scott and City Council expressed the need for a tire collection.
The Historic Landmarks Commission AmeriCorps Member from Preservation Alliance of West Virginia Candice Helms sought assistance from the REAP program through the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
According to the City of Hinton, they held a yearly tire collection in May of that year generating 3,500 tires. With this being such an enormous turnout, the Hinton City Council sought funding to pay for labor for a monthly collection that effortlessly continued into 2022.
In October 2022, the Summers County Solid Waste Authority purchased the lot the collection was being held on and was happy to continue the tire collection along with their recycling program.
In total, 3,397 tires were collected on-site and another 4,500 were collected off-site making the total for the two years of collection 13,512.
