MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) — West Virginia House Majority Whip Marty Gearheart has officially filed paperwork to seek re-election to the West Virginia House of Delegates, continuing his bid to represent District 37.
Gearheart was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2010 and has won re-election every two years since, with the exception of 2018 when he did not run. In 2014, he was part of the historic shift that gave Republicans control of the House for the first time in 83 years, a change supporters say helped reshape state policy and priorities.
Since then, Gearheart has played a key role in advancing legislation aimed at economic growth, tax relief, and regulatory reform. Supporters say he plans to run an active campaign, highlighting his experience and record while arguing that continued leadership is needed to maintain momentum in Southern West Virginia.
Among the legislative accomplishments highlighted during his tenure are:
-
A 27% reduction in the state income tax
-
A personal property tax rebate on automobiles
-
Elimination of West Virginia’s cap-and-trade law, which Gearheart sponsored as the first bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature
-
Passage of a school discipline law, for which he served as lead sponsor
-
Enactment of Right to Work
-
Repeal of the prevailing wage law
-
Approval of the Brunch Bill
-
Adoption of tort reform laws
-
Passage of pro-life legislation
Gearheart said he believes the state is on a clear path toward long-term prosperity and that now is not the time to slow progress.
