WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Wyoming County Prosecuting Attorney, Derek Laxton, announced today that Jacob Todd Hatfield, 47, of Itmann, was convicted of two counts of grand larceny, one count of transferring stolen goods, one count of burglary, and one count of destruction of property, all felony crimes.
Hatfield’s potential sentencing exposure is five-to-fifty-five years in prison, if he receives the maximum sentence for these charges.
These convictions are a result of three separate investigations conducted by the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office into Hatfield’s criminal activities.
Sgt. Matt Lane investigated Hatfield for a string of cable thefts that occurred back in October of 2023. Hatfield, along with others, cut and took tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of communication wire belonging to Frontier Communications in the Herndon area of Wyoming County. Hatfield then took the wire to scrap yards for sale. Sgt. Lane was able to identify Hatfield in surveillance footage selling the wire and worked with Frontier employees to identify the wire brought to the scrap yard as the same wire that was cut from their poles in Herndon.
Sgt. Christian Hedinger investigated a break in that occurred in March of 2025 in the Long Branch area of Wyoming County committed by Hatfield. Community members discovered Hatfield in a residence in Long Branch and called law enforcement. Sgt. Hedinger, along with Corporals Tucker Cook and Jacob Ellison, arrived on scene and took Hatfield into custody. Upon their arrival, law enforcement discovered that not only had Hatfield entered the residence without permission, he had damaged property as well, including over $2500 in damage to items inside the residence and over $1000 in damage to a vehicle parked outside.
Finally, Lt. Will Hall investigated Hatfield for taking a 1995 Harley Davidson Speedster motorcycle in Itmann in October of 2023. Lt. Hall discovered that Hatfield had stolen the motorcycle and sold it to another individual, where it was recovered by police and returned to the owner.
Hatfield is currently incarcerated in the Southern Regional Jail pending sentencing, which will take place on February 17th at 1:30 in the Wyoming County Courthouse in Pineville.
