National Basketball Association (NBA) legend Michael Jordan’s jersey has broken the record for the most expensive basketball jersey ever sold.
Today, May 8, Jordan’s North Carolina Tar Heels basketball jersey sold through Heritage Auctions for $1.38.
This is the only known game-worn Jordan jersey in existence. It was worn by Jordan in his 1982-1983 season with North Carolina- the same season that he won NCAA Player of the Year.
This jersey also happens to be the one he wore for the magazine cover featured in that same season, according to Heritage.
This record shatters the previous record for a Jordan game-worn jersey. The now second-highest-paid jersey was a Chicago Bulls jersey from the player’s 1986-1987 season. It sold for $480,000.
Jordan’s North Carolina jersey was previously sold at a different auction in 1999 for $63,500. At the time it was sold, it held the current record for the most expensive basketball ball jersey sold.
Other Jordan collectibles such as cards, basketballs, and autographed game-worn Air Jordan 1s have been sold throughout the years totaling millions of dollars. He had a rookie card sold for $100,000, a basketball sold for $294,000, and a pair of Air Jordan 1s sold for $21,780.
