MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A crash on I-68 has resulted in the death of a Garrett County, MD police officer, Sheriff Bryson Meyers of the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department announced.
According to Sheriff Meyers, Deputy Corey D. McElroy, 31, passed away at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown on Wednesday morning due to his injuries.
He was the father of two young children and served in the United States Marine Corps before joining the sheriff’s office.
Deputy McElroy was traveling home from the police academy to attend the graduation of a family member. He was operating a Garrett County Sheriff’s Office police vehicle at the time of the crash.
According to Maryland State Police, shortly before 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack responded to westbound Interstate-68 at Route 36 in Frostburg, Maryland for a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2017 Ford Explorer was driving westbound on 1-68 when the vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer. Later investigation discovered it was an unmarked Garrett County Sheriff’s Department police vehicle.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
