MCDOWELL, WV (LOOTPRESS)— McDowell County Schools planned a summer camp for all grade levels that engages students with different activities.
All of the duration of the camps is from July 12th through August 6th, 2021, Monday to Friday. It will be held at both Mount View High School and River View High School.
The comeback camp was possible with funds from a West Virginia grant and federal funds.
Amanda Peyton, an educator with McDowell, says that this opportunity helps welcome students back to the classroom.
“The goal is to get students back onto campus and start building those relationships in-person again and give a chance for socialization and tap into their interests,” said Peyton.
Some activities from the summer camp include: fishing, jewelry making, culinary, and robotics.
The interest camps is for all grade levels but the camps also have grade-specific activities.
Students in elementary school have the option to strengthen their reading and math with intervention programs.
Middle school students can visit the Career Technical Center to explore trades and high school students can take electives that aren’t normally offered during the school year. There is also an option for credit recovery for classes students might not have done well in.
“We really have something for everyone,” said Peyton
Meals, material, and transportation are offered for free through the funds the county received.
The camps will also follow safety protocols.
Parents will need to fill out the forms to register their child for the camp. If there are multiple students, they will need to be registered separately.
