MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On Tuesday evening, the Mercer County Board of Education members voted to approve a new superintendent during a special meeting.
Edward Toman will start his 21st superintendent year with Mercer County Schools on July 1, 2021.
Toman majored in education at Marshall University from 1982 to 1984. Toman received a B.A. degree in 1991 from Glenville State College and an M.A. in 1997 from West Virginia University. He was also credited with a superintendent certificate from Marshall University in 2001.
Toman was the previous superintendent of Wetzel County Schools in New Martinsville, WV. He was also the former superintendent for Ritchie County Schools, Gilmer County Schools, and Writ County Schools. Toman also holds experience with teaching, coaching, and being the director and coordinator for Glenville State College.
“I am beyond excited to get to work serving the students and staff of this beautiful and unique place,” said Toman.
Toman will replace Dr. Deborah Akers, retiring from a 27-year tenure as superintendent with Mercer County on June 30. He says that there are big shoes to fill when he begins.
“Dr. Akers has been an incredible leader for this system, and I, like many other Superintendents across the state, admire the length of her service for Mercer County Schools,” said in a statement Toman released on Twitter.
Once Tomas announced his new position, congratulatory statements poured in from social media.
“Thanks to each of you for your trust and belief in me to continue to lead Mercer County to be the best of West Virginia,” said Toman.
Toman moves to Mercer County with his wife, Michelle, and his son, Campbell, 16. They also have two other children: Tristin, 25, Jordan, 30, and two sheepdogs.
