ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Mercer County Public Schools hosted the 2023 Reading Bee event on Wednesday.
Facilitated at the Concord University campus in Athens, WV, the event tested participating students in several fields of knowledge including Vocabulary, Comprehension, Reading Skills, and Readers’ Theater.
Fourteen teams from elementary schools throughout the county convened at the Concord University Student Center on Wednesday morning to put their considerable skills to the test. Later in the day, they would assemble in the upstairs ballroom area for the announcement of the winners.
Awards we’re given in multiple categories, with the grand prize of “Overall winner” being awarded once again to returning champions Montcalm Elementary, and Glenwood School claiming the prize for runner-up.
Once the winners were announced and awards distributed, competing teams posed for photos with Mercer County Schools Superintendent, Edward Toman; and President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of the Two Virginias, Jeff Disibbio

Readers Theater: 1st place: Athens Elementary
runner-up: Straley Elementary
Skills: 1st place: Montcalm Elementary
