While Class AAA schools aren’t as plentiful in southern West Virginia, there’s no shortage of area athletes representing the area in the 16 events scheduled to take place in the State Track and Field Championships.
With the 400- and 3200-meter runs knocked out on Friday evening, the stage is set for the final competitions to take place Saturday at Laidley Field in Charleston.
Starting on the boys side Oak Hill’s Leonard Farrow and Greenbrier East’s Micah Cole will seek championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Beckley’s Brandon Canaday and Oak Hill’s Austin Bias will compete for the 1600-meter title.
Greenbrier East’s Gabriel Paxton will compete in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, with Beckley’s Hezekyiah Creasey joining him in the 110 and another Flying Eagle, Jacobe Harville, competing against Paxton in the 300.
The high jump will feature Beckley’s Keynan Cook and the Greenbrier East duo of Malachi Crews and Lanty Rose. Beckley’s Ty’lai Kimball will be the only local competitor in the long jump while fellow Flying Eagle Michael Miller and Oak Hill’s Lucas Whaples compete in the shot put event.
On the team side Beckley will compete in the 100-meter relay, 800-meter relay and 110 shuttle hurdle. Greenbrier East will join Beckley in the 100 and 110 while Oak Hill will be the lone local team competing in the 200-meter relay.
On the girls side Oak Hill’s Shannon Farrow and Greenbrier East’s Lillie Shinaberry will lace ’em up for the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The duo will be joined in the 200 by Beckley’s Somalia Nelson. Beckley’s Colette Lindley will compete in the 800- and 1600-meter run. She’ll be joined in the 1600 by teammates Lauren Curtis and Gillian Breeden.
Oak Hill’s Kiya Babkirk and Princeton’s Hayley Collins will compete in the 300-meter hurdles.
In the field events East’s Edie McMillion will compete in the high jump while Beckley’s Kyndall Ince battles in the long jump. The Beckley duo of Somalia Nelson and Paige Merchant will battle for a shot put title with another Flying Eagle, Mia Houck, competing for the discus championship.
The team events will feature East and Oak Hill in the 100-meter relay, East and Beckley in the 200, Oak Hill in the 400, Beckley in the 800 and Beckley and East both in the 102.5 shuttle hurdles.
During Friday’s 400- and 3200- meter dash Babkirk, Lindley and Curtis all competed, but none were able to place. The same was true on the boy’s side where Beckley’s Stanley Martin and Eli Padgett competed in the 400 and the Beckley duo of Canaday and Christian Saffouri in the 3200.
Heading into Saturday’s events with two completed in each group, Parkersburg’s boys and Jefferson’s girls lead the team championships.
