YADKIN COUNTY, NC (LOOTPRESS) – Yadkin County Schools in North Carolina is mourning the loss of two students in just one week.
According to school officials, a 17-year-old Forbush High School senior, Norah Smitherman, was shot and killed on Thursday, November 4. A few days earlier, 11-year-old Madison Styers, a fifth-grader at Courtney Elementary School, died in a car crash.
“This has been a challenging week for our schools with the passing of two of our students in separate incidents this week. Please keep the families of these students as well as our schools, staff, and the entire YCS community in your thoughts and prayers today and in the days to come,” a message from Superintendent Todd Martin.
It was first believed that Norah Smitherman was shot by accident on Gospel Way Church Road in Yadkinville, but police later arrested a 17-year-old juvenile for second-degree murder. He was also a student at Forbush High School. His name is not being released at this time because he is a minor.
He had his first court appearance on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, and was denied bond. His next court appearance is next week.
