(LOOTPRESS) – Gamers and comic book fans caught a glimpse of the latest title set in the gritty streets of Gotham City Monday when DC and Warner Brothers debuted an all-new cinematic launch trailer for Gotham Knights.
The upcoming RPG, scheduled for an October 21st, 2022 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, will allow players to inhabit various allies of the Dark Knight within a universe in which Batman himself has purportedly perished.
The unanticipated end of the vigilante creates a vacuum in the latest iteration of Gotham City, a vacuum which the criminals of the city are more than happy to fill with an exponentially increased rate of lawlessness and general criminal activity.
As such, it is left to Batman’s former proteges, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl), Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Jason Todd (Red Hood), and Tim Drake (Robin) to protect the city and continue the legacy of the fallen hero.
“Players will tackle an array of challenges as they evolve into their own version of the Dark Knight,” says WB Games Publicist Joshua Ball.
Fans will work to connect the secrets of the city while, in a nod to the origins of the Batman character, solving mysteries and taking on some of the most notorious villains in the DC Universe.
Some of these names include Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Clayface, while the Court of Owls will serve as antagonists throughout the story.
Gotham Knights will support both one and two-player modes, and each character will be endowed with abilities specific to them. Players will also be able to utilize vehicles such as the Batcycle in gameplay.
Despite having been developed by the same developer, WB Games, Gotham Knights will be a standalone title unrelated to the preceding title, Batman: Arkham Origins, or any of the other titles in the Arkham series, according to the developer.
Originally scheduled for an October 25th release, it was revealed in August that the release would occur on October 21st.
An official six-issue prequel series from DC, Batman: Gotham Knights – Gilded City, will be released October 25th as a companion to the game itself.
“Each physical issue includes a code for a redeemable in-game item; issue No. 1 includes a code for an exclusive BOSO22 Batcycle skin,” says Ball.
“Subscribers to the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE digital subscription platform will also receive each issue day and date with its print counterpart and is the only digital path to receiving the in-game items.
The platform also includes a wide-ranging selection of stories featuring all of the Gotham Knights videogame characters. Those who pre-order the upcoming title will receive the 233 Kustom Batcycle Skin at launch, based on the vehicle’s first appearance in DC’s Detective Comics #233.
