UPDATE: CENTRAL WHEELING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The assailant responsible for the Wednesday afternoon stabbing of a woman in the Central Wheeling area has been detained according to police.
The Wheeling Police Department reports on Thursday, May 25, 2023, that John E. Hampton – 38 years old of Wheeling – has been arrested and charged for his involvement with the events which occurred on Wednesday.
“Hampton is believed to have stabbed a female in the 2200 block of Lane E around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday,” said authorities.
It was also confirmed that a second individual claiming to have been assaulted on Wednesday was actually Hampton.
“After the stabbing, Hampton fled the scene and showed up at Wheeling Fire headquarters on Market Street saying he was assaulted.”
The suspect was arraigned before an Ohio County Magistrate and was transported to Northern Regional Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 cash only bond.
The victim in the incident reportedly remains in the hospital in stable condition.

WHEELING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities with the Wheeling Police Department are currently investigating what could potentially be separate attacks which took place Wednesday afternoon in the Wheeling area.
The Wheeling Police Department reports that, around 12:45pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, police and fire personnel were called to report to the 2200 block of Lane E in Center Wheeling to address reports of a stabbing incident which had occurred.
It is reported that moments after this call was received a male arrived at the Wheeling Fire Headquarters indicating that he had been assaulted in the area as well.
Authorities confirmed that one female victim has been transported to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital to receive treatment from fire department paramedics.
The status of the victims is currently unknown at the time of writing and the investigation is actively ongoing. Police have confirmed that thus far no arrests have been made in relation to these incidents.
