ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One driver was arrested following a collision which took place in Randolph County on Friday.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on May 19th, 2023, Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office along with Randolph County EMS and Elkins Fire Department responded to Rt 33 Allegheny Highway near the Elkins Economy inn with regard to a minor two vehicle collision involving a semi-truck and a sedan.
The driver of the sedan was identified as the defendant, Juan Castro Chitop. The defendant purportedly appeared unsteady while attempting to stand, placing weight on his vehicle as a means of maintaining balance.
Investigating deputies report detecting a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the defendant and noticed that his breath was slurred while speaking as well.
These factors, along with the bloodshot, watery eyes of the defendant, led officers to administer a preliminary breath test at the scene of the incident which the defendant failed.
Further investigation of the incident led authorities to believe that the defendant failed to yield to oncoming traffic which ultimately resulted in the collision which occurred. No injuries are reported to have been sustained as a result of the accident.
The defendant was taken into custody by authorities and was transported to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail to await arraignment.
