CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On Monday, the West Virginia State Senate passed a bill that would exempt institutions from having to obtain a permit for cremation if the body was donated for science.
Senate Bill 270, introduced by Senator Tom Takubo (R-Kanawha) would get rid of the requirement that institutions must secure a permit from the Chief Medical Examiner, county medical examiner, or county coroner from where the death occurred only if the body was donated for science purposes.
Cremation usually occurs two years after donation.
Senate Bill 270 does not get rid of the permit requirement altogether.
The bill passed through the Senate on a 32-0 vote with two members absent. Senate Bill 270 now goes to the House of Delegates for consideration.
