FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Effective last year, the Sheriff’s Office will no longer conduct the annual Real Estate Tax Lien Sale.
West Virginia Legislature passed Senate Bill 552 into law during last year’s session, which now puts the West Virginia State Auditor responsible for conducting these sales. The Sheriff’s Tax Office must certify a list of delinquent properties to the West Virginia State Auditor’s Office at the close of business on October 31 each year. Once this list is submitted to the Auditor’s Office, the land owner must contact the Auditor’s Office to redeem the property before it is sold in their sale. The time frame to redeem property is shorter with this new process.
The list of 2022 delinquent properties will be published starting September 21, 2023. Certified letters are in the process of being mailed out as well to the last current address at the time of assessment.
Please use this as a reminder of the importance of paying your real estate taxes by October 31 each year to avoid having to redeem your property through the West Virginia State Auditor’s Office.
As always, you can pay your taxes in person Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Delinquent forms of payment are cash, cashier’s check, money order, or credit card.
Also, certified payments only start on September 25, 2023. Postmarks will not be accepted.
Payment must be in the office by the close of business on October 31, 2023.
