TUCKER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Winter enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to in Tucker County this season. With new investments, expanded snowmaking, and upgraded facilities, the region’s three major destinations — Canaan Valley Resort, Timberline Mountain, and Blackwater Falls State Park — are rolling out improvements aimed at elevating skiing, snowboarding, and family-friendly fun across the county.
Canaan Valley Resort Boosts Snowmaking Power
Canaan Valley Resort, which offers 47 trails across 850 skiable acres, has completed a major upgrade to its snowmaking operation. A newly installed pump — part of a $6 million investment from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources — will significantly improve snow output and efficiency.
The improved system will allow the resort to lay down more snow faster, providing more consistent conditions throughout the winter and supporting the potential for an extended season. The resort has also expanded its grooming capabilities with the addition of a new snowcat.
Timberline Mountain Adds Lifts, Snow Guns, and More
Timberline Mountain is also entering the season with fresh enhancements. Known for housing the state’s first high-speed six-person lift from Doppelmayr, the resort has added:
-
A new rope tow linking its small and large terrain parks
-
A new trail connecting both parks
-
Six SMI Super PoleCat tower snowguns
-
Eleven new HKD stick snowguns
-
Upgraded electrical systems along Salamander Trail
Infrastructure improvements continue across the property, including expanded parking, increased restroom capacity, a newly constructed building for the ski and snowboard school, and a larger rental inventory — particularly for snowboard boots.
Blackwater Falls State Park Prepares Popular Sled Run
The winter season isn’t just about skiing. Blackwater Falls State Park is preparing to reopen its well-loved sled run on December 18. Recent work includes maintenance of the Wonder Carpet conveyor lift, tree clearing, and a new storage building.
Tickets for sledding dates beginning December 20 are now available online. The park has also confirmed that its annual Cardboard and Duct Tape Race will take place on February 28, 2026.
Tourism Leaders Anticipate a Strong Season
Jessica Waldo, Executive Director of the Tucker County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the steady stream of upgrades reflects the community’s commitment to delivering a first-rate winter experience.
“Each season, our local resorts continue to invest in improvements that give visitors reliable conditions and a memorable experience,” Waldo said. “Whether you’re here for the slopes or family fun, winter in Tucker County has something for everyone.”
