(LOOTPRESS) – Total U.S. coal exports increased from July to August by +17.7%.
Metallurgical coal exports increased month over month by +25.6%. Thermal coal exports increased by +9.2% from the previous month. Year to date, compared to the same eight months of 2020, total U.S. coal exports are up +23%. Metallurgical coal exports are up +8.6% and thermal coal exports are up +27.7% compared to the same time last year.
U.S. met coal exports to Europe increased month over month by +12.2%. Compared to the same eight months of 2020, met coal exports to Europe are off by -17.4%. Met coal shipments to North America increased from July by +32.4%. Compared to 2020, U.S. met coal exports to North America are up +8.2%. U.S. met coal exports to South America declined month over month by -10.5%. Compared to last year, total U.S. met coal exports to South America are off -8.9%. Met coal shipments from the U.S. to Japan increased substantially from July to August by +130%. Compared to the same eight months of last year, total U.S. met coal exports to Japan are up +2.6%. There were no reported shipments of U.S. met coal to South Korea in August, falling from 111,000 tons in July. Compared to 2020, total U.S. met coal exports to South Korea are off by -71%. Shipments of U.S. met coal to India increased month over month by +103.4%. Year to date shipments of U.S. met coal to India are off by -22.7% compared to the same eight months of 2020. Met coal exports to China increased month over month by +25%. Compared to the same time in 2020, total U.S. met coal shipments to China are up >1,000%.
Export of U.S. thermal coal to Europe declined from July by -35.4%. Year to date, shipments of U.S. thermal coal to Europe are up +78.4% compared to the same time last year. U.S. thermal coal shipments to North America decreased month over month by -44.1%. Year to date, thermal coal exports to North America are up +10.2% compared to the same time last year. Thermal coal exports to South America increased month over month by +260%. Compared to 2020, total U.S. thermal coal shipments to South America are up +4.9%. Shipments of U.S. thermal coal to Japan increased from July by +8.5%. Compared to the same eight months of 2020 total U.S. thermal coal shipments to Japan are up +53.3%. Exports of thermal coal to South Korea increased by +32% month over month. Total thermal coal shipments to South Korea are up year to date by +0.7% from 2020. Thermal coal exports to India increased from July by +41%. Compared to the same time in 2020, total U.S. shipments of thermal coal to India are up by +93.7% so far this year. U.S. exports of thermal coal to China declined from July by -27.9%, but year to date thermal coal exports to China are up >100%.
Average reported export met coal prices decreased from July by -2.5% (-$4.00/ton). Average reported export thermal coal prices increased month over month by +5.1% (+$3.07/ton).
Quantified by export port and customs district, met coal exports decreased from July to August from Baltimore by -21.8%. Met coal exports increased month over month from Hampton Roads by +20.2%. Export met shipments from Mobile increased substantially from Mobile by +190.9%. Reported export met coal shipments from New Orleans decreased from July by -88.7%. Met coal shipments from other ports / districts (Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Cleveland, Charleston, Los Angeles) increased month over month by +44.6%. No metallurgical coal shipments have been reported from Philadelphia to date in 2021.
Compared to the same eight months of 2020, total met coal exports from Baltimore are up +7.3%, Hampton Roads +10.7%, Mobile +2.4%, New Orleans +73.1%. Total met coal shipments from the remaining ports and custom districts are up +14.2% compared to the same time last year.
Thermal coal exports from Baltimore increased month over month by +31.5%. Exports of thermal coal reported from Hampton Roads was virtually unchanged from July (272,000 tons). Shipments of thermal coal from Mobile increased by +100% (32,000 tons) in August after no thermal shipments were reported in July. Thermal coal exports from New Orleans declined month over month by -7.7%. Thermal coal shipments from the remaining other ports and districts (Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Cleveland, Charleston, Los Angeles) increased by +124.4% from July to August.
Year to date, compared to the same eight months of 2020, total thermal coal export shipments from Baltimore are up +66%. Exports of thermal coal from Hampton Roads are down by -7.7%. International shipments of thermal coal from Mobile are off by -39.4% from 2020. Thermal coal exports from New Orleans are up +216.8% from the same eight month period in 2020. Shipments of thermal coal from the remaining ports and districts are up +21.1% from the same time last year.
