In national agriculture news on November 12, 2021 the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association called on Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack to immediately suspend all imports of fresh beef from Brazil to the United States. NCBA’s Vice President of Governmental Affairs Ethan Lane was quoted saying “It’s time to keep Brazilian fresh beef out of this country until USDA can confirm that Brazil meets the same consumer and food safety standards that we apply to all our trade partners.” In the letter sent to USDA, NCBA asked for a suspension until the agency conducts a thorough risk assessment and review.
At the local markets Cattlemen’s Livestock in Caldwell, WV reported 752 cattle in the barn with 400-600lbs steer coming in at $1.40 to $1.75, heifers of same weight at $1.10-$1.35, and slaughter cows from $.40-$.65. Staunton Union Stockyard in Staunton, VA reported selling 1144 head with 400-600lb steers coming in at $1.48-$1.71 and heifers at $1.21-$1.30. Finally Narrows Livestock, Narrows, VA reported 638 head sold with 400-600lbs steers selling at $.93-$1.57(average $1.50) and heifers at $.37-$1.31(average $1.13.)
