BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A winter storm bringing snow, strong winds, and dangerous cold is set to impact the region from this morning through early Saturday, with the worst conditions expected in the mountains.
Forecasters say accumulating snow will create hazardous travel conditions across warned and advisory areas. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the mountain counties, while surrounding counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory. Confidence in the forecast ranges from medium to high.
Snowfall is expected to lead to slick roads and reduced visibility, especially on higher elevation routes. Officials warn that power outages are possible, particularly in mountain areas where heavier snow and wind will overlap.
In addition to snow, a High Wind Warning has been issued for the higher terrain of northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph counties. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 miles per hour from this evening through Saturday evening. These winds may down trees and power lines and could send unsecured outdoor objects airborne, posing an injury risk.
Dangerous cold will follow the storm. Wind chills are forecast to drop into the minus teens across the lowlands from tonight through Saturday afternoon, and into the minus teens to minus 20s across the mountains through Sunday morning. Exposure to these conditions could quickly lead to hypothermia or frostbite.
Residents are urged to limit travel during periods of heavy snow, secure loose outdoor items, prepare for possible power outages, and dress in layers if heading outside.
