BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A winter storm is bringing significant snowfall to portions of central, southeast, and southern West Virginia today, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 9 p.m. EST this evening.
The warning covers a broad area including Kanawha, Boone, Clay, Northwest and Southeast Raleigh, Northwest Fayette, and Northwest Nicholas counties, as well as cities such as Charleston, South Charleston, Madison, Saint Albans, Clay, Oak Hill, Fayetteville, Beckley, Sophia, Summersville, Craigsville, Prosperity, Montgomery, and Birch River.
Forecasters are calling for storm totals of 3 to 5 inches of snow, with locally higher accumulations possible on ridgetops. The snowfall is expected to create slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions, particularly during the Monday evening commute.
Officials urge residents to use caution if travel is necessary. Motorists are advised to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of emergencies. Up-to-date road conditions can be accessed by calling 511 or by visiting the state’s online traffic and roadway information portal.
The storm is expected to taper off later this evening as conditions gradually improve.
