CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A storm that could dump a significant amount of snow is set to take aim at West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning from midday Thursday through Friday morning.
The weather service said snow accumulations could total 3 to 8 inches, depending on the location. For some areas it would mark the first significant accumulations this winter.
The warning area includes most of West Virginia, central and eastern Kentucky and several counties in eastern Tennessee.
In western Tennessee, the forecast called for the possibility of a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow on Thursday, with accumulations of up to 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
Officials warned of hazardous driving conditions during morning and evening commutes. A winter weather advisory has been issued for western Tennessee.
A warming center was scheduled to open at a Memphis community center on Wednesday evening for people who need relief from the cold weather overnight.
