BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Woodrow Wilson High School teacher John Quesenberry was in for a surprise on Monday when he was presented with the National Civics Teacher of the Year Award for the 2023-2024 school year.
The award was issued as part of an unexpected presentation from the Bill of Rights Institute on Monday. Each year, the Bill of Rights Institute honors a civics teacher who is making a difference for students in the classroom by helping them to learn about their country, government, and how to represent the ideals of a free and just society.
Along with national recognition, the National Civics Teacher of the Year award entails a $5,000 grand prize.
On September 1, 2023, Woodrow Wilson’s John Quesenberry was named as a finalist for the prestigious award, the winner of which was to be announced on Friday, September 15, 2023. The time for celebration came early, however, with Monday’s surprise announcement.
“So hard to believe this literally happened today,” said Quesenberry following the award presentation. “So thankful and appreciative of everybody who have been so encouraging and supportive.”
Raleigh County Schools Superintendent Serena Starcher was among those present for the ceremony, and Raleigh County Schools acknowledged Quesenberry for his remarkable accomplishment, stating,
“Congratulations to Woodrow Wilson [High School] teacher John Quesenberry who was awarded National Civics Teacher of the Year!”
The official announcement will be made during a National Constitution Day Live program from the Bill of Rights Institute on Friday.
