WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia coal production decreased slightly from the week ending May 1 by -0.07%, driven by a -0.52% decline in production from the state’s CAPP region week over week.
Production from the NAPP region of the state increased week over week by +0.24%.  Year to date, compared to 2020, statewide production is off by -1.5%.  Production from the state’s NAPP region is up by +9.4%, but CAPP production is down by -12.7% from the same time in 2020.
National coal production decreased slightly from the previous week by -0.45%. Â Production from the entire Appalachian basin increased slightly by +0.26%. Â Year to date, compared to 2020, national coal production is up by 1.1%, while production from the Appalachian basin is off by -4.2%.

Weekly production from the entire NAPP thermal region decreased slightly week over week by -0.06% and implied national metallurgical coal production was unchanged from the previous week (week over week declines in the CAPP met region were offset by weekly increases in production from the NAPP and SAPP met regions). Â Year to date, compared to the same time in 2020, production from the entire NAPP thermal region is off by -1.46%. Â Implied national met production is off by -6.6%.
Thermal coal prices were unchanged from the previous week. Â Average U.S. natural gas prices increased by +0.35%.
Domestic iron and steel production decreased slightly week over week by -0.78%, with furnace capacity utilization fell slightly by -0.76%.
National electric generation increased from the previous week by +0.63%, with output from the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions increasing by +1.78%. Â Generation in the Central Industrial region decreased by -0.78%.
U.S. rail traffic declined week over week by -3.21%, with coal loadings decreasing by -0.46%, finished steel and steel raw materials decreased by -3.75%, auto parts and finished auto carloads decreased slightly by -0.14%. Â Year to date, compared to 2020, total rail traffic is up +4%. Â Coal carloads are up +2.6%, steel raw materials and finished steel are up +11.1% and auto parts and finished auto traffic is up by 20.3%.
