WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Wyoming County Schools released a memorandum on January 14, 2026, addressing concerns raised on social media regarding a children’s book available in a district school library.
The issue began after State Senator Brian Helton (R-Fayette) says he was contacted by parents.

He posted the following to Facebook:
“Parents notified me today that this book was given to kindergarten students in a Wyoming County School. This ideology has no place in our schools!
Kindergarten should be about reading, math, and fundamentals not ideology.
I will be demanding answers as to who approved this and why it’s being sent home with our youngest children.”
Following the post, Wyoming County Schools said it conducted an immediate review of the situation.
In its memorandum to parents, guardians, and community members, the district stated that the book in question was not part of any curriculum and was not assigned, required, or distributed to students.
According to the district, the situation involved a brief library checkout by a kindergarten student who voluntarily selected the book during routine library time and returned it shortly thereafter. The memorandum states that no teacher or staff member directed the student to select or read the book.
“Wyoming County Schools is aware of recent social media discussion concerning a children’s book available in a district school library,” the memorandum reads. “The district conducted an immediate review of the matter.”
The district further stated that it takes parent concerns seriously and encouraged families to contact their school or the district directly so questions can be addressed promptly and accurately.
A screenshot of the book referenced in the social media discussion, titled “King & King & Family,” has circulated online as part of the controversy.
“King & King & Family” is a children’s picture book written by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland. It is a sequel to King & King.
The book follows two kings who are married and living together. In this story, they decide they want to have a family. With the help of relatives and friends, they adopt a child and become parents.
