TUCKER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A 14-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon after being struck by a falling tree limb while riding the conveyor belt at the Blackwater sled run, authorities said.
According to the West Virginia State Police, Tucker County 911 received a call at approximately 1:10 p.m. reporting that a tree limb had broken off a standing tree and hit the juvenile.
At about 1:27 p.m., CPR was initiated, but emergency responders later pronounced her dead at the scene.
The incident occurred roughly 75 yards from the top of the sled run when a 14-foot section of tree broke free and struck the girl in the head.
Investigators believe extreme high winds may have contributed to the limb falling.
Upon arrival, Senior Trooper C.A. Hawkins found that the juvenile had been moved from the scene to the lodge area and then transported to Davis Memorial Hospital.
The girl’s parents were present at the time of the incident.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name.
