HOPEWELL, VA (LOOTPRESS) – The Hopewell City Public Schools community is in mourning after the tragic death of a 10th-grade JV football player during practice on Monday.
According to Hopewell City Public Schools, the 15-year-old student, described as genuine and remarkable, collapsed during light drills about 40 minutes into practice.
Coaches immediately administered CPR and called 911. Paramedics arrived swiftly and transported the student to the hospital.
Despite following standard safety protocols, the incident highlights the school’s need for athletic training services, which are set to start on August 12, 2024.
Grief counseling will be available for students when school resumes on Wednesday.
The school’s air conditioning issues have been resolved, according to the school district.
The Hopewell High School community is requesting privacy as they grieve the loss.
